I went to my salon (Diva International) for a much needed haircut and refresh yesterday. My hairdresser, Diva, started out my visit with nice olive oil treatment – she heated up some olive oil, applied it to my hair, and gave me a great scalp massage – before washing my hair. It felt great and made my hair shiny and smooth.
It seems like lately we’ve all been gravitating towards these DIY home beauty treatments. While I do have my favorite hair products, I also like to experiment with some at home treatments (especially if it is treating an issue I rarely have like volume or just needing a deep cleaning). Below are 5 hair issues and a pantry product to use to help your hair look pretty.
coconut oil for moisture: Similar to what Diva did on my hair with the olive oil, heat up some coconut oil, apply on your hair, and massage for a few minutes. Cover your hair with a warm towel for a few minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Alternatively, you can try applying the coconut oil before going into a sauna or steam room (from my fitness junkie beauty tips).
avocado to de-frizz: The natural and lightweight oil in avocado can help smooth out the hair. Simply mash up a small amount of avocado and apply it directly on damp hair, or you can even mix it with a few tablespoons of conditioner for an extra moisturizing/smoothing effect. Leave it on for 15 minutes before washing it out with cold water.
beer for volume: I know that you’re probably thinking you would rather drink beer, but apparently the combination of vitamin B, amino acids, and yeast do wonders for fine and limp hair. Use a light, organic beer (or one with minimal preservatives – meaning skip the Budweiser) and allow the beer to go flat. Although you may hear about applying the beer directly on your hair, avoid the alcohol smell by mixing it with an equal part shampoo and rinse thoroughly. It’ll give you enough volume to last a few weeks.
baking soda for deep cleaning: This will help remove any product buildup and give you a deep cleaning (usually necessary every two weeks). Mix 1 tablespoon with a small amount of water until a paste forms, and then massage it into damp hair (focusing on the scalp). Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, rinse out thoroughly and follow with your normal shampoo and conditioner routine. You should only do this every 2 weeks to avoid drying out or damaging your hair.
*apple cider vinegar to simulate hair growth: Disclaimer! This not something that I can substantiate in anyway, just something I’ve heard from others and also read quite a bit about online (for example – here). Some claim that apple cider vinegar stimulates better circulation to the hair follicles, and that the better the circulation, the more nutrients will reach the follicles and the healthier your hair will be. At very least, apple cider vinegar does help with build up and cleans up the scalp. And worth trying for hair growth?
Combine 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water. This DIY treatment works best in a spray bottle that you can use to directly apply the mixture to your scalp. Massage and rinse out with cold water. Similarly to the baking soda, this is a treatment you’ll want to limit to every 2 weeks.
