Shishito peppers are a popular appetizer dish at Japanese restaurants and one of my favorites. I literally order shishito peppers every time I see it on a menu. There is a little bit of bite to these peppers, but they are not spicy at all so an easy appetizer to order.
I was very excited when I saw shishito peppers at Whole Foods this week, so I needed to try out a new recipe. With this one, I used a Japanese inspired sauce with ponzu, ginger, and garlic. It is a very simple recipe as all you have to do is saute the peppers with olive oil and then add the sauce at the end. So satisfying! Eat it as an appetizer, or just a side dish. Shishito peppers are a great side to a steak (the steak and eggs with shishito peppers at the NYC restaurant Boqueria is to die for!) Enjoy!
1 tablespooon olive oil
2 cups shishito peppers
2 tablespoons ponzu sauce
1 teaspoon of ginger (ideally fresh but powder will work)
2 teaspoons of crushed garlic
1 teaspoon sea salt
1. Mix the ponzu, ginger, and garlic in a bowl. Set aside.
2. Heat the olive oil under medium heat and add the peppers.
3. Saute the peppers until blistered (about 8 minutes).
4. Transfer the peppers to a bowl.
5. Pour the ponzu ginger sauce over the peppers and mix to distribute the sauce evenly. (Warning: do not add the sauce as you’re sautéing as the sauce will caramelize and burn).
6. Sprinkle the sea salt over the peppers and serve!
